Formatting Capabilities AddedFinally! I've managed to get a WYSIWYG editor working on the site. This should make it easier for people to do all of the specific formatting that they want to do without having to know how to program the tags necessary to do things.
Each story/page/blog entry can now be formatted using the controls that will appear at the bottom of the Body section when creating a post. It will be possible to use bold, italics, underlining, text colors, smilies If you need help with the editor just click on the Help icon (blue circle with the white question mark inside).

Holy Wow!
Steve:
Holy wow! That is both wonderful and annoying. Is there any way to toggle back and forth between WYSIWYG mode and code view mode?
LGPL eh?

View mode toggling
I've enabled the rich text mode enable/disable functionality. When disabled then the text box shows the background code.
I'll keep this in place unless it starts to be abused, at which point I'll either disable it or make another user classification that is permitted to use this feature, which I deem the better path.

Ahhh, yes. I see it
Ahhh, yes. I see it now.
I guess I'm just one of those people who gets nervous when I don't see the inner workings of some things.
This new interface has a vastly expanded set of HTML tags, so it's not using the old filters or it wouldn't work. If the new editor strips those types of tags it doesn't support I don't see how anyone might abuse this... unless they manually fiddle with things and royally screw it all up.
Thanks!

View mode toggling
There is a way (I think) but I'm not sure if I want to allow it. Historically people haven't been very responsible when using the built in codes and it's caused some problems. By locking in the use of the editor it eliminates those holes.
Maybe after I do some testing I'll loosen the restrictions a bit and allow people to toggle back and forth between editor and code view. If so then that will become an available option under Input format.

Form over function
It may not be that important...
However, I see that some are already embracing form over function. It's like the early days of the Mac.
Errrm, I'd just like to suggest that people worry more about how to write than making it all look "pretty", which can be difficult to read. What might be awesome would be to strip out everything not needed for manuscript preparation. The features we had before with the limited HTML were plenty.

I had noticed that
I noticed the same thing when I was making sure that all of the stories were stored in the correct format.
Perhaps a limited set of functionality would be better. I'll look at what I think is necessary versus what is just fluff and turn off those capabilities since they don't really add to the story writing.
Different functions for different uses
Is there a way to set up different functionality for different uses? It's nice having font families, colors, and sizes; emoticons; bullet and numbered lists; links; (ummm, no pictures?); tables; background colors; and crazy justifications in forum posts--but they aren't necessary in the stories.
I noticed one story where the author had all kinds of cool titles and subtitles and copyright notices and other hoo-ha, in different sizes. Then the body of the story was really tiny text in bold (at least it was all black text).
Oh pleeze! If they'd spend half as much time working on the story it'd be a darn sight easier to read.
No pictures, eh?
